Indonesia’s Specialty Coffee in Taiwan

By Rusliyanto, Class of 2023

Type of drink that Taiwanese like the most (except bubble tea)

After living in Taiwan for a year, I discovered that people here prefer coffee to tea. This was supported by an academic paper. At least 40% of the population consumes coffee on a daily basis, while Taiwan can only meet 15% of the demand. Additionally, Indonesia produces a variety of specialty coffees, and I believe Taiwanese consumers will find our coffee to be intriguing.

Indonesia’s Specialty coffee

The term specialty coffee is usually used to describe the beans of the best flavor which are produced in special micro-climates. Indonesia consists of a group of islands and is an agrarian country. This is what makes Indonesia have at least 15 specialty coffees from different provinces in Indonesia. Each specialty coffee has a distinctive and unique taste. If you are a lover of original black coffee, you will really like it.

And because of my current work, I enable it to go around more than 30 provinces in Indonesia, and I can taste every specialty coffee from different provinces. In my opinion, there are at least 5 specialty coffees that you should try, namely:

  1. Luwak arabica coffee from Aceh Gayo.
  2. Gayo Coffee from Aceh.
  3. Robusta coffee from Lampung.
  4. Sidikalang coffee from North Sumatera.
  5. Mandailing coffee from North Sumatera.

Gayo coffee for Starbucks around the world!

Did you know that Gayo coffee is the world's greatest specialty coffee? not just from the flavor but also from the scent. This coffee was grown by locals in the Gayo highlands, which are specifically in the districts of Bener Meriah and Central Aceh in the middle of Aceh. The world's largest coffee shop “Starsbucks” has stated that "Sumatran Coffee (Gayo Arabica)" has consistently ranked first not only in Indonesia but also globally, and that Gayo Arabica always takes the top spot among several varieties of coffee beans they sell. In my opinion, if you’re coffee lovers, then you’re really need to try this coffee!

Indonesia’s specialty’s coffee in Taiwan

Because Indonesia has a solid reputation when it comes to our specialty coffee, I thought Taiwanese may regularly enjoy Indonesian coffee. Nowadays, Luwak and Mandailing coffee, two Indonesian speciality coffee varieties, have gained popularity in Taiwan. In addition, dealers or farmers of Indonesian coffee beans can now collaborate with the owners or managers of prestigious minimarkets and coffee shops in Taiwan, at least for the purpose of supplying LOUISA coffee shop. And with introducing more specialty coffee from Indonesia to Taiwanese, I think they will like it!
