Taiwan's footprint in Poland - what Taiwanese food and culture can an average Pole consume?

Taiwan is a small island in East Asia, known for its vibrant culture, breathtaking natural landscapes, and rich history. Although small, Taiwan has significantly contributed to the world economy, with its products and brands gaining global recognition. Even in Poland, where Taiwanese culture or history isn't well known (trust me, when I tell people where I live, people constantly mistake it for Thailand), one can experience Taiwan through its products, foods, and other items connected to this fascinating country.

The Taiwanese community in Poland may not be large, but it is still thriving, with many Taiwanese ex-pats and students living in various cities across the country. In Warsaw, the Taiwanese Representative Office, the University of Warsaw, or informal groups organise cultural events and activities, such as the annual Lunar New Year celebration, which is open to the public. Visitors can experience traditional Taiwanese customs and delicious Taiwanese cuisine during these events. In my experience, it was mostly snacks, but hey, who knows, maybe there is an aspiring chef stationed in Poland who would love to show Poland why Taiwanese beef noodles (牛肉麵) or Three Cups King Oyster Mushrooms (三杯杏鮑菇) are simply fantastic.

One of Poland's most well-known Taiwanese products is bubble tea, a sweet and refreshing drink made with tea, milk, and tapioca pearls. Bubble tea originated in Taiwan in the 1980s and has since become a global phenomenon, with millions worldwide enjoying this tasty beverage. In Poland, several bubble tea shops serve authentic Taiwanese-style bubble tea, such as Bubble Tea 7, Wulkan 火山 Bubble Tea, and Pij herbatę - Bubble tea to go. These shops offer many flavours and toppings, including fruit, jelly, and popping boba.

Another popular Taiwanese food that can be found in Poland is the baozi (包子), a type of steamed bun filled with various savoury or sweet fillings. Baozi is a staple food in Taiwan and other parts of East Asia and is often eaten as a snack or a light meal. Several Chinese and Taiwanese restaurants in Poland serve baozi, such as Hana Sushi & Baozi in Krakow and Momo Dumplings in Warsaw.

Taiwan is also known for its high-quality electronics and technology products, with many Taiwanese brands gaining global recognition. In Poland, several Taiwanese electronics brands, such as Acer and ASUS, are well-known for their laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices. These brands offer cutting-edge technology and sleek designs, making them popular among tech-savvy consumers in Poland.

In addition to electronics, Taiwan is also famous for its cosmetics and skincare products, which are made from natural ingredients and are gentle on the skin. Taiwanese skincare brands like My Beauty Diary, Naruko, and Dr. Wu are gaining popularity in Poland. Many beauty enthusiasts appreciate their high-quality products and affordable prices. These brands offer various skincare products, such as moisturisers, serums, and sheet masks, suitable for all skin types.

Taiwan is also known for its unique and innovative literature and cultural items. Taiwanese dramas are becoming increasingly popular. I have seen a couple of movies during the Azjatycki Festiwal Filmowy Pięć Smaków – a film festival focusing on Asian movies. In terms of literature, there isn't too much choice, but I know you can find more famous books like Stories of the Sahara (撒哈拉的故) by Sanmao (三毛) or Jimmy Liao's (廖福彬) Sound of Colors(地下鐵)

In conclusion, Taiwan is a small but mighty country that has significantly contributed to the world economy and culture. Even in Poland, one can experience Taiwan through its products, foods, and other items connected to this fascinating country. From bubble tea to baozi, electronics to cosmetics, and works of art, there is something for everyone to enjoy and appreciate. So why not explore Taiwan in Poland and discover all the amazing things this country offers?
