A hidden gem near Hsinchu – a one day tour to the beach and the market of Nanliao (南寮)

By Michal Glasek, Class 2023

When the weekend comes, the big question of where to go next pops into a Hsinchu’s citizen mind. There are a lot of places in Hsinchu county, but there is one that outshines them all. Nothing beats going to the beach and enjoying some sunbathing and swimming on a sunny day.

But before that, we first need to get there. The easiest way to travel to Nanliao is by scooter, bicycle or car. First, you need to get to Road 68 and go all the way to the coast. By the end of it, you will hit a big parking lot, and you will be able to see the actual market (which can also be listed as a night market on Google Maps; however, it is much recommended to go during the day).

If you opt for public transport, expect the journey to last for about an hour (we start at the main Chiao Tung University campus). First, you need to take bus 2 to Dongmen Market and switch to Shuttle Bus BL15.

The moment you finish your journey, you will be hit with a breeze (or gusts, depending on the weather) of fresh air with a lovely scent of the sea. The first thing to do is get some drinks and some snacks. It is worth mentioning, during the writing, the market was only open during the weekends, with a few stalls available during morning/afternoons hours during the week.

Let’s get back to the food. We highly recommend trying all the seafood that gets your attention; no worries, if you like crab, you will find dozens of species, fish – very much the same, fancy some shrimps – lollygag no more, there are no sea creatures you cannot find here. You can opt for a nice cold bubble tea (boba) or a hot coffee for drinks.

Satisfy your hunger

There sadly aren’t many options for vegetarians and vegans except for a stall selling BBQ mushrooms and almond milk drinks.

We highly recommend you resist the temptation to satisfy your hunger straight away. After only 5 mins into the sea, you can hit a lovely promenade on the left, a massive park (with many people playing with kites, training birds and more), and a gorgeous beach to your front.

And that is precisely where we can enjoy our snacks. Don’t leave the beach just yet. Enjoy your time, read a book, study for your univeristy courses, learn some Chinese and maybe just do some creative thinking.

The beach faces the west so that the sunsets can be the very pinnacle of this trip. There are usually little to no clouds (due to the strong winds), so don’t miss out on that experience. Enjoy your trip!
